Year 6 2020 - 2021
Welcome to Year 6's class page
Y6 Class Teacher - Miss Trimble
TAs - Miss Edu and Mrs Reynolds
Year 6 is such an exciting year and the last step in our children's journey at St Chad's. We will be working hard this year as well as having lots of fun and making memories to take with us on the next step of life's adventure.
In our English lessons this half term, we will continue studying a detective story – The Falcon’s Malteser – by Anthony Horowitz and then write our own detective story; as well as continuing to develop our knowledge of SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar).
We will be learning about fractions, position and direction, decimals and percentages and algebra in our Maths lessons.
Light is the focus of our Science lessons. We will identify sources of light and then follow this by studying reflection and refraction.
‘Protecting the Environment’ will be the theme of our Geography lessons. In this unit, we will consider if we are damaging our world and how we can protect it. We will investigate energy production, the oceans and minerals, as well as conducting an enquiry into how the school can become more sustainable. Children will explore the local environment, focusing on the local rivers and community. They will develop their geographical skills and fieldwork including using maps, atlases, globes and compasses.
‘The Local Area’ will be a focus in our Art lessons as we learn how to use perspective, depth and tone in drawing from observation.
During our RE lessons, we will be learning about the Bible and why it is so special for Christians as well as the unity of the Eucharist and how it enables people to live in communion.
We are lucky to have a sports coach from Manchester City helping us in our P.E. lessons.
To find out more about what we will be learning throughout the year see the curriculum overview in the 'Curriculum' section of the website. Click here to view.
Year 6 will have P.E. on Wednesday. The children should come to school wearing their P.E. kit on Wednesdays.
The school P.E. kit is a plain white t-shirt, a pair of black or navy shorts and a pair of black pumps. We will be doing P.E. outside whenever possible so the children can wear black or navy tracksuit bottoms / leggings and a black or navy tracksuit top / sweatshirt / hoodie.
English and Maths homework, along with spellings will be given out on Thursday. Homework should be completed by the following Monday either online – using Seesaw – or on the paper and returned to school.
Each child has been provided with a reading book based on their Accelerated Reader assessment. Your child should read at home every day; please sign their reading record when they have read. Once your child has completed their book, they will take the Accelerated Reader quiz based on the book they have read. On completion of the quiz they will be given a new book.
It is expected that children in Key Stage 2 read for at least 20 minutes each night.
