Dear Parents & families,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you into the Year 6 webpage, we have a busy and exciting year ahead!

Topics:

This term in History, we will be learning all about the rise and fall of The Kingdom of Benin.  In Science, we will be focusing on Light and Electricty, in R.E we will explore the topic of loving and deepen our knowledge of other faiths - with a focus on Judaism and in Geography we will be completing Information Stations - finding out all about European countries and comaparing them to the UK.

Our current class book is The Legend of Darkmouth by Shane Heggarty which we will be using to inspire our own writing.

Please see the attatched Yearly overview for more information on our subjects.

Reading spine

This year, our reading spine is made up of: Holes - Louis Sachar, Clockwork - Philip Pullman, The Hobbit - JRR Tolkein, Skellig - David Almond, Fireweed - Jill Paton Walsh, River Boy - Tim Bowler and The Arrival - Shaun Tan.

Walking home alone:

To ensure that our Y6 pupils are sent home safely at the end of each day, we politely request that a letter is sent into school if your child wishes to walk home from school rather than be collected by an adult. We permit children who are walking home to bring a mobile phone in to school which is then switched off and kept locked in the office until home time.

Year 6 responsibility

This year, why not encourage your child to apply for a role with responsibility in school? In year 6, the children are given many opportunities to act as role models and support the younger children, and we will be looking to appoint Prefects in Autumn 2.

Homework:

Children will have weekly spellings which will be tested in school each week. Times tables need to be known fluently (12x12) and regular testing will take place. They will also bring home reading books and a library book. Please ask relevant probing questions to ensure children’s understanding of the text.
The homework is to assist the children with their end of year tests and transition to high school and will usually include comprehension, mathematics and SPAG in written form. The homework will be set on a Monday and must be returned on the following Friday.

Uniform:

Correct uniform is to be worn for school. P.E. kits will be needed every Wednesday. Note that jewellery is not allowed to be worn in school.
